Skiing at Cypress Mountain in Vancouver, Canada

Cypress Mountain is the largest ski area on Vancouver’s North Shore, about 30 minutes by car from downtown. It has 600 skiable acres, 610 meters of vertical, night skiing until 10pm, and the runs that hosted the 2010 Olympic freestyle events. Adult day tickets ran roughly CA$61 to CA$124 online in 2025/26.

I skied Cypress Mountain in March 2016, on a free day during a longer stay in Vancouver. I picked it because it is the closest full-size ski area to the city, and because it hosted the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

What I found was a mountain that does one thing well. It turns a city break into a ski day without a hotel change, a long drive or a Whistler budget.

It is not a ski holiday destination, and it should not be sold as one. The vertical is 610 meters, less than 40 percent of Whistler Blackcomb’s, and weekends get busy.

My visit is ten years old, so I re-checked every price, hour and route below in October 2026. Where something has changed since my day there, the current fact wins.

Cypress, Grouse or Seymour?

Vancouver has three ski areas on the North Shore, and they suit different trips. Cypress is the biggest of the three by a wide margin.

Whistler Blackcomb is about two hours up the Sea-to-Sky Highway. It is a different category of trip, and worth it only if you have at least two days.

My day skiing Cypress Mountain

I took the SeaBus from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay, where the Cypress shuttle left for the mountain. The ride up took about 45 minutes.

The snow was good for mid-March on a coastal mountain, firm in the morning and softening by lunch. Lifts and lodges felt modern, a legacy of the Olympic upgrades.

What stood out most was the lack of lift lines. On a weekday I never waited more than two minutes, and every run was signed, with trail maps at the main junctions.

Lunch at the lodge was better and cheaper than I expected from a ski area restaurant. I left before dark, which is my one regret.

Verdict: worth it as a ski day from a Vancouver hotel. It is not worth building a whole trip around.

The terrain: what 600 acres means in practice

Cypress spreads across two peaks, Mount Strachan at 1,440 meters and Black Mountain at 1,200 meters. Between them sit 600 skiable acres and 61 marked runs, served by six chairlifts and a magic carpet.

The longest run, T33 into Collins, drops 610 meters over 4.1 kilometers. Top Gun is the most difficult, falling 300 meters in a single kilometer.

Intermediates get the most out of Cypress. Strong experts will find a few steep lines but will run out of new terrain by early afternoon.

One detail most guides miss: Cypress was the first ski area in British Columbia to allow snowboarding, in March 1987.

Verdict: worth it for intermediates and mixed-ability groups. Skip it if you are an expert with a car and one free day, and drive the extra distance to Whistler instead.

Night skiing at Cypress Mountain

Cypress runs night skiing daily from 5pm to 10pm in season, on lit runs above the city. It is the part I would plan around if I went back.

A night ticket costs less than a full day. Cypress listed an adult Nite Owl ticket at around CA$60 on select dates in 2025/26.

The catch is the weather. Coastal fog and rain at the base can turn a planned night session into a wet one, so check the mountain report before you head up.

Verdict: worth it, especially on a clear evening. Seeing Vancouver lit up below the runs is something Whistler cannot offer.

What a day at Cypress Mountain costs

Cypress uses dynamic pricing, so the same ticket can cost twice as much on a holiday Saturday as on a quiet weekday. Prices below are in Canadian dollars, checked in October 2026 against 2025/26 rates.

A realistic adult day with ticket, rental and parking comes to roughly CA$120 to CA$185. That is a fraction of a Whistler day, which is the strongest argument for Cypress.

Where people waste money: the ticket window. Window prices run above online rates, and weekends and holidays can sell out.

How to get to Cypress Mountain

By car

From downtown, cross the Lions Gate Bridge, follow the signs to Highway 1 westbound and take Exit 8 onto Cypress Bowl Road. The road climbs about 15 kilometers to the base, roughly 30 minutes from downtown without traffic.

Winter tires or chains are expected on the mountain road. Check that your rental car has them before you book it.

Lots 1B, 2 and 3A charge CA$10 a day, payable by app or at the pay stations. Lot 3B is free, with a free shuttle to the lodges.

By shuttle

Without a car, take the SeaBus from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay and board the Cypress Coach Lines shuttle there. Adults pay CA$35 round trip plus fees and GST, and drivers take cash only.

Schedules change by day and season. Check the return times before relying on the shuttle for a night session.

From the airport

From Vancouver International Airport, allow about 45 minutes by car in light traffic. There is no direct public transit to the mountain.

Best time to ski Cypress Mountain

The season usually runs from late November to mid-April. In 2025/26 Cypress opened on November 21 and closed on April 12, and the 2026/27 opening is projected for late November.

January to March is the reliable window. The base builds steadily through winter and peaks in March, which is also when I went.

The weather caveat most guides skip: Cypress sits close to the ocean, so rain at the base is common even in January. The top of the mountain can feel like a different season from the parking lot.

Where to stay: Pan Pacific Vancouver

I stayed at the Pan Pacific Vancouver, inside Canada Place on the downtown waterfront. It is a practical base for Cypress, since the SeaBus at Waterfront Station is a short walk away.

The rooftop has an outdoor heated saltwater pool and hot tub, open from 6am to 10pm. Go up early and you can watch the light come up over the North Shore Mountains you skied the day before.

A day at Cypress Mountain, planned

Morning: Walk to Waterfront Station, take the SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay and catch the shuttle, or drive up and park in Lot 3B. Aim to be on the first chair, when the groomers are firm and the lines are short.

Midday: Ski Black Mountain in the morning sun, then break for lunch at the lodge before the noon rush.

Afternoon: Move to Mount Strachan for the longer runs, including T33 into Collins. If you are staying for the evening, take a short break around 4pm.

Evening: Ski under the lights from 5pm, then head down before the 10pm close. Check the last shuttle time before you commit.
