The first surprise at The Knockholt Retreat is not that it feels remote. It is how little distance you need to travel before London loosens its grip.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knockholt sits on the North Downs, close enough to the capital for the journey to feel almost suspiciously easy, yet the retreat opens onto a much bigger landscape: fields, woodland, wide sky and the kind of darkness in which stars become visible again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no marble reception, no hushed spa corridor and no complicated wellness menu. Instead, there are bell tents, fire pits, a wood-fired sauna and permission to stop filling every minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I spend much of my work looking at how environments affect the nervous system, through light, sound, layout, privacy, temperature, materials and connection to nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most restorative places are not always those that have spent the most money. Often, they are the places that remove demands. Knockholt understands that almost instinctively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
