The fastest way is by private transfer, taxi, or rental car, which takes about 5.5 hours.

My travels through Guatemala have been nothing short of an epic journey, from the highlands to the coast.

Let me combine my experiences with practical travel advice to show you the best ways to travel around this stunning country!

Transportation Options

MethodTravel timePrice
Bus+8 hrs~$33
Shared Shuttle7 hrs~$41
Private Transfer~5.5 hrs
Rental Car~5.5 hrs
Taxi~5.5 hrs

1. Chicken Bus

Journey Duration: 8+ hours

Taking the Chicken Bus is one of the most authentic and budget-friendly options.

These old but brightly colored, converted American buses, known for their local character, offer a unique experience.

However, travelers should be aware of safety concerns while on these buses, as they can be less secure than other options. While you should ride a chicken bus at least once, we don’t recommend it for longer trips.

Standard buses are another alternative for those seeking a more secure and straightforward route. Although there is no direct service from Guatemala City to Lanquín, a two-part journey is easily arranged.

First, take a bus from Guatemala City to Cobán, which will cost approximately USD 25.31. From Cobán, you’ll need to catch another bus for the final leg to Lanquín, costing around USD 8. While slightly more expensive and involving a transfer, this option offers a safer and more comfortable travel experience.

2. Shared Shuttle

Journey Duration: 7 hours

If you prefer a little more comfort, we recommend boarding a shared shuttle.

This mode of transport balances cost and comfort, offering a more direct and convenient journey than the local buses.

Guatemala Travels offers a daily shuttle at 09:00 AM from Guatemala City to Lanquín. Tickets are USD 41!

The Pick-up point is at McDonald’s Utatlán, Calz. Roosevelt Diagonal 12 31-55, Zona 11, and you will arrive at Gasolinera Puma, Lanquin, in about 7 hours.

3. Private Transfer

Journey Duration: 5 hours 40 minutes

The third transportation option is a private transfer. This luxury and personalized travel option provides the utmost comfort, convenience, and security.

Private transfers are ideal for those who prefer a tailored travel experience, especially for families, groups, or those carrying a lot of luggage.

When you book a private transfer, you’ll have the entire vehicle to yourself, allowing you to customize your journey. You can also choose your departure time, making it a flexible option that fits your schedule.

The journey duration is shorter than the shared shuttle, taking around 5.5 hours, with the added benefit of direct travel without stops for other passengers.

These transfers are usually conducted in well-maintained, comfortable vehicles, ranging from sedans for smaller groups to larger vans for bigger parties.

The cost will vary based on the vehicle size and any additional services requested.

4. Rental Car

Journey Duration: 5 hours 40 minutes

This choice offers the ultimate flexibility and independence, allowing you to explore at your own pace and on your terms.

Renting a car is ideal for those comfortable navigating new roads and who value the freedom to make spontaneous stops and detours along the way!

The journey from Guatemala City to Lanquín by car takes about 5.5 hours, but this can vary depending on the route and driving style.

The roads can be challenging, with winding routes and varying conditions, so drivers need to be cautious and experienced in handling such terrain.

Rental car companies in Guatemala City offer vehicles to suit different needs, from compact cars to SUVs, better suited for the sometimes rugged Guatemalan roads.

The cost of renting a car will depend on the type of vehicle, the rental duration, and any additional insurance or features you choose to include.

5. Uber or Taxi

Journey Duration: 5 hours 40 minutes

And lastly, it is theoretically also possible to take a taxi to Lanquín. In this case, however, we recommend agreeing on a set price.

We heard stories of taxi drivers who canceled the booking or asked for a higher price once people got in the car. One of the reasons is that it may be difficult for the driver to find people to travel back to Guatemala City.
