Getting to San Jose from Jaco

Based on my personal experience and cross-checked with advice from GuateGo CEO Jean Nรกjera, this guide provides reliable travel information.

1. Shared Shuttle

Journey Duration: 2 hours

Traveling by shared shuttle is an affordable option. It only takes 2 hours and I especially like that they provide a door-to-door service. You donโ€™t have to worry about carrying your luggage everywhere.

Multiple companies operate from Jaco at different times throughout the day!

Going further, the vehicles offer plenty of luggage space. Therefore, taking a shuttle from Jaco is a convenient transport alternative. Most travelers choose this standard shared shuttle option as the most affordable solution.

2. Coach Bus

Journey Duration: 2 hours

A coach bus is another excellent travel option.

Coach buses offer comfort, luggage space, and safety while traveling long distances.

Also, it is among the cheapest options, so you will definitely save some money.

Bus tickets are typically sold out quickly, so you should buy yours online in advance if you want to avoid having to wait until the next day, like me.

Check the bus schedule to ensure your seat is available at your desired time.

3. Public Bus

Journey Duration: 2- 3 hours

Taking the public bus is a good option if you travel on a budget.

Even though it’s not the most convenient, it’s the cheapest way to reach San Josรฉ. Personally, I also like it for the local experience. It is a great way to get in contact with people and get to know the culture better.

An individual bus ticket costs only USD 5 – USD 10, but you must arrive at least half an hour in advance to purchase your ticket (an hour in the peak season). Buses depart from the main bus terminal, located close to the beach.

Costa Rican buses are punctual, so show up early if you want to catch one.

4. Private Transfer

Journey Duration: Custom time

A private transfer is a hassle-free and stress-free option. Your driver will pick you up right at your hotel or wherever youโ€™re staying in Jaco.

What I like most is that companies use clean, modern vehicles, and many drivers are happy to make stops along the way.

Prices for a private transfer to San Jose:

  • 1 to 5 passengers: USD 135

5. Rental Car

Journey Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

A rental car will give you the most flexibility while exploring Costa Rica!

Thereโ€™s a highway connecting San Josรฉ and Jaco, making the drive super easy. Just keep in mind thereโ€™s a small toll of around USD 5.

The drive itself is pretty quick, about an hour and a half, and having your own car gives you the freedom to stop whenever you like.

6. Uber or Taxi

Journey Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Finally, if you’re out of options, you can always take a taxi, despite it being the least convenient option.

The cost of a taxi is typically nearly the same as a private shuttle transfer. If you do not know a reputable company, just jump in a regulated taxi or ask the reception in your hotel to book it for you.

If you’re traveling at night, fares might increase, so be prepared to pay more if you arrive at San Josรฉ late at night. It’s always a good idea to check the exact price before you set off on the trip to avoid unpleasant surprises.

My Tip:
If youโ€™re on a tight budget and have time, the public bus is your best option. If you want more comfort and hotel pick-up, go for the shared shuttle. For groups or travelers who value flexibility, a private transfer or rental car makes the journey fast and easy.
