About Universal Traveller
Universal Traveller is an independent travel publication covering luxury hotels, active and adventure travel, and first-hand travel experiences from around the world.
Founded by Tim Kroeger in 2011, the publication is built around a simple principle: the people writing about a hotel, journey or destination should have meaningful first-hand experience of it whenever the format requires it.
Exceptional stays. Memorable journeys. Useful travel intelligence.
Universal Traveller focuses on travel experiences where first-hand perspective can add something useful that a hotel website, booking platform or press release cannot.
Luxury Hotel Reviews
First-hand reviews of hotels and resorts covering the room, sleep experience, service, dining, location, facilities, wellness offering and overall value of the stay.
Active & Adventure Travel
Long-distance cycling, unusual journeys, outdoor experiences and destination stories for travelers who want to do more than move between hotels.
Travel & Hospitality Insights
First-person stories, expert perspectives and conversations with the people behind hotels, destinations and distinctive travel experiences.
Stories with a clear point of view.
Alongside our hotel reviews and destination coverage, Universal Traveller publishes recurring editorial series designed to go deeper into the people, places and journeys that make travel memorable.
48 HOURS SOMEWHERE EXTRAORDINARY
A short stay, done properly.
A focused 48-hour itinerary built around one exceptional place, combining where to stay, what to do, where to eat and the experiences worth making time for.
Meet the people who make extraordinary journeys possible.
First-person stories and interviews with expedition leaders, pilots, guides and other people whose work takes travelers beyond the usual itinerary.
One journey. One story worth remembering.
First-person travel stories built around a single journey, moment or experience — told by the person who lived it.
We are interested in what actually happens after check-in.
Is the room comfortable to live in, not just photograph? Does the service remove friction? Is the location genuinely worth traveling for? Does the experience feel distinctive? And does the stay justify the price being charged?
The same principle applies beyond hotels. A memorable trip can happen on a bicycle, a mountain road, a remote coastline or through a conversation with someone who understands a destination better than any guidebook.
Universal Traveller exists to document those experiences with enough context to help readers make better travel decisions.
Experience first. Evidence where it matters.
Trust comes from being clear about what we experienced ourselves, what came from a source, and where a commercial relationship exists.
Hotel reviews are based on real stays
Our independent hotel reviews are based on first-hand stays. Where relevant, we identify the room or villa category and describe the specific experience that informed the review.
Hosted stays are disclosed
If accommodation, experiences or other services were provided complimentary or at a discount, that relationship is disclosed to readers.
Hotels do not approve independent reviews
Hotels, tourism boards and PR representatives do not receive editorial control over the conclusions of our independent reviews.
Sponsored content is labeled
Paid editorial features are clearly identified as sponsored content and are separate from independent reviews. Payment does not purchase a review score or independent endorsement.
Facts and context are separated from opinion
Practical information such as location, facilities and room features is presented separately from our judgments about service, comfort, value or the overall experience.
Travel information can change
Prices, operating hours, hotel facilities and travel conditions can change after publication. We update material information when we become aware that it is no longer accurate.
Built from more than a decade of first-hand travel.
Universal Traveller was founded by Tim Kroeger in 2011 while he was studying International Tourism Management and traveling extensively through Asia.
His perspective on travel and hospitality comes from both sides of the industry. Tim studied tourism management, worked in travel and tourism operations, and spent six years as a Lufthansa flight attendant before building his publishing businesses full-time.
Since then, he has traveled to more than 112 countries and personally assessed more than 230 hotel nights while developing a particular interest in the intersection of luxury hospitality and active travel.
His own journeys have included long-distance cycling routes across Southeast Asia alongside years of hotel and destination reporting.
Tim leads Universal Traveller’s coverage of luxury stays, adventure and active travel.
His separate work on luxury wellness, longevity travel and the Restorative Index is published at tim-kroeger.com .

Commercial relationships are kept separate from independent reviews.
Universal Traveller works with hotels, tourism organizations and travel businesses, but readers should always be able to understand the nature of that relationship.
Independent reviews
A hosted or discounted stay may support access, but the hotel does not purchase the conclusions of the review.
Sponsored features
Paid editorial placements are clearly identified as sponsored and are not presented as independent reviews.
Affiliate links
Some pages may contain affiliate links. When a reader books through one of those links, Universal Traveller may receive a commission without increasing the reader’s price.
Hotels change management, restaurants close, prices move, facilities are renovated and travel rules evolve.
When we become aware of a material factual error, we correct it. Where a page contains time-sensitive practical information, readers should also verify critical details directly with the relevant hotel, operator or official source before traveling.
If you believe something published on Universal Traveller is factually inaccurate, please contact us with the page URL and supporting information so it can be reviewed.
