EDITORIAL POLICY
Editorial Standards
Universal Traveller publishes first-hand hotel reviews, active travel reporting, destination guides and contributed travel stories with a focus on accuracy, transparency and editorial independence.
Last updated: September 2026
What readers should expect from us
Our goal is to help readers understand what a hotel, destination or journey is actually like before they spend their time or money on it.
Independent hotel reviews are based on real stays. Travel stories are written from direct experience wherever the format requires first-hand reporting. When we use external information, official sources, contributor reporting or supplied photography, we identify and verify it appropriately.
Commercial relationships may support the publication, but they do not purchase independent editorial conclusions or review scores.
Our Editorial Principles
Four standards guide our work
01
First-hand where it matters
Independent hotel reviews are based on actual stays. Experience-led travel stories are written by people who have taken the journey, visited the destination or used the service being described.
02
No editorial control
Hotels, tourism boards, PR agencies, advertisers and commercial partners do not approve our conclusions or determine the outcome of independent reviews.
03
Clear disclosure
Hosted stays, discounted stays, relevant contributor relationships, affiliate links and sponsored content are disclosed so readers can understand the commercial context.
04
Corrections stay visible
When a material factual error is identified, we correct it and document the change rather than quietly rewriting the article.
Hotel Reviews
How we review hotels
Our reviews focus on the details that shape how a stay actually feels, not simply the hotel’s positioning or star rating.
What we pay attention to
Sleep quality
Mattress, bedding, blackout, noise and room layout.
Wellness
Gym equipment, spa, sauna, pools and recovery facilities.
Service
Pre-arrival communication, check-in, housekeeping and issue resolution.
Design
Lighting, storage, ergonomics, materials and functional room technology.
Dining & bar
Breakfast quality, coffee, dietary flexibility and signature venues.
Location & access
Neighbourhood feel and practical access.
Sustainability & impact
Practices with visible outcomes for guests or the destination.
Accessibility
Step-free access, lifts and in-room access notes where we can reasonably assess them.
How we conduct a review
- Booking and invitation status. We prefer to book and pay like any guest. Hosted or discounted stays are disclosed.
- Room type and dates. Reviews identify the room or villa type and the month and year of the stay.
- Observations during the stay. Depending on the property, we assess areas such as night noise, blackout performance, water pressure and temperature, Wi-Fi, bedside power, gym equipment, spa functionality and breakfast quality.
- Photography. We prioritise our own photography. Supplied or PR imagery is identified where relevant.
- Verification. Factual details such as property names, opening years, room counts and amenity hours are checked against staff information or official sources before publication.
- Editing. Reviews are edited for clarity, evidence, factual consistency and conflicts of interest.
Updates & re-verification
We aim to re-verify flagship reviews approximately every 12 months or following a significant change such as a major renovation or management change. Substantive revisions include a dated update note.
Travel Reporting
How we report travel stories
Our adventure stories, itineraries and first-person features are built around direct experience whenever the format calls for it.
Writers are expected to distinguish between what they personally experienced, what another source told them and what comes from official information.
Contributed first-person pieces are edited for clarity and accuracy while preserving the contributor’s perspective and voice.
Independence & Disclosure
Commercial relationships do not buy editorial conclusions
Hosted & discounted stays
When a hotel, tourism organisation or partner provides a complimentary or discounted stay, we disclose that relationship in the article.
A hosted stay does not guarantee coverage, a positive conclusion or a particular rating.
Contributor relationships
If a contributor has a relevant personal or professional relationship with a property or organisation being covered, we disclose it in plain language.
Press trips
We may accept invitations or participate in press trips when the itinerary permits meaningful reporting. Participation does not guarantee publication.
Commercial Content
Advertising, affiliate links and sponsored content
Affiliate links
Some articles contain affiliate links. If a reader makes a purchase through one of those links, Universal Traveller may earn a commission at no additional cost to the reader.
Sponsored content
Paid editorial placements are clearly labelled as sponsored. Sponsored content follows our factual and disclosure standards but does not receive an independent hotel review score.
Advertising & partnerships
Display advertising, sponsorships and commercial partnerships do not determine the outcome of independent reviews.
Photography
Our own images first
We prioritise photography created during our own stays and journeys. When supplied or PR photography is used, it is identified where appropriate.
Verification
Facts before publication
Operational details, names, property facts and other factual claims are checked against direct observation, staff confirmation, official sources or appropriate documentation before publication.
Accuracy
Corrections policy
If we make a factual mistake, we correct it and document material changes.
What we correct
- Incorrect names or factual property details.
- Prices stated incorrectly for the relevant time period.
- Amenity, distance or opening-year errors.
- Incorrect attribution, photo credits or quotations.
- Broken or materially misleading links.
What we update
Time-sensitive information such as renovations, operating hours or policy changes that do not alter the original editorial conclusion may be labelled as updates rather than corrections.
How to request a correction
Email info@universal-traveller.com and include:
- The URL of the article.
- The exact passage you believe is incorrect.
- The correction you propose.
- A source or document supporting the change.
Our review process
We aim to acknowledge correction requests within two business days and review straightforward factual issues within seven business days. Complex cases may require additional verification.
How corrections appear
Correction (DATE): We corrected a factual error.
Update (DATE): We added or refreshed information that does not materially alter the original conclusion.
Editor’s Note (DATE): We made a larger change that affects the interpretation or context of the article.
Takedowns & Removals
We generally do not remove published reviews
In rare circumstances involving legal, privacy or serious factual concerns, an article may be temporarily unpublished while the issue is investigated.
