14 Best Things to Do on San Cristóbal, Galápagos
The best things to do on San Cristóbal combine Kicker Rock’s marine life, a guided Isla Lobos outing, highland stops at El Junco and Cerro Colorado, and coastal walks around Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Choose a dedicated Kicker Rock trip or a 360-degree snorkeling tour first, then build your land days around it.
Choose the right boat day before booking
A dedicated Kicker Rock snorkeling tour focuses on that site and a beach stop. A 360-degree tour adds a wider coastal circuit, often including Kicker Rock. Booking both may repeat the main snorkeling stop. Neither is automatically a scuba dive or a Punta Pitt landing-and-hike excursion.
These options depart from San Cristóbal. Confirm swimming requirements, sea conditions, gear, food, pickup and cancellation terms for your date. Galápagos entry fees, hotel and travel to the island are separate. If you want scuba, contact Planet Ocean or another qualified dive operator for the appropriate product.
Though not as large as Isabela or as populated as Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal is worth a stop. One of the archipelago’s older islands, it offers beaches, highland ecology and a convenient town base. El Junco is a freshwater lake in its greener interior.
San Cristóbal at a glance
- Base: Puerto Baquerizo Moreno for hotels, restaurants and boat departures.
- Stay: Three nights for two full days; add nights for Española, Punta Pitt or several boat outings.
- Airport: San Cristóbal (SCY), on this island. Confirm the correct airport for every flight.
- Planning: Cycling and a guided highlands trip are alternatives, not two required outings.
- Timing: Visit durations are editorial estimates unless linked to a specific operator.
For the full island sequence, see our 10-day land-based Galápagos itinerary.

1. Diving at Kicker Rock, with a Snorkeling Alternative
My scuba dive at Kicker Rock, also called León Dormido, was the highlight of my trip to the Galápagos Islands. I partnered with the scuba diving tour company Planet Ocean for the experience.
The process actually began the day before the tour, when we all met up with the divemaster and company owner, Alex, to go over the tour and get fitted with all the proper equipment.
Although there were twelve other divers on my trip, the company kept the group well organized, and I felt comfortable with the arrangements.
The boat we dove from was quite high-end, and all the crew members were professional and happy to explain or go over things multiple times for anyone that had questions.
Between dives, the tour company offered snacks and a lunch with salad, fish, chicken, and brownies.
On my first dive into the water, I saw a school of 40 hammerhead sharks. I was awestruck.
The crew got some great shots, and that material was available to us for free at the end of my trip. Confirm current photo and equipment inclusions rather than assuming the same offer today.
Practical information
- Location: Kicker Rock / León Dormido, reached by boat from San Cristóbal.
- Costs and inclusions: Scuba and snorkeling are different products. Confirm equipment, meals and current total.
- Access: Scuba requires operator approval of certification and experience; open-water conditions affect both activities.
- Allow: Keep most of the day free. The linked snorkeling alternative advertises seven hours.
- Planning tip: My story describes scuba with Planet Ocean. The GetYourGuide widget is snorkeling, not that dive. No shark sighting is guaranteed.
Want to snorkel rather than scuba dive?
My account and photograph above describe a scuba dive. The separate GetYourGuide option below is a snorkeling day trip, advertised at around seven hours. Check its current gear, wetsuit, meals and meeting arrangements. It is not a Planet Ocean scuba booking, and my hammerhead encounter is not a promise for your outing.
Plan flight and highland timing after scuba
Discuss both your next flight and highland travel with the dive operator before booking. Divers Alert Network’s flying-after-diving guidance gives minimum intervals for specific dive profiles, not a guarantee of safety. Keep a suitable no-dive buffer and follow the requirements for your own dives.
2. A Day Tour to Isla Lobos
Recommended by Lora from Explore with Lora
Isla Lobos is a smaller island near San Cristóbal that can be visited on an authorized day tour. Our tour began with a boat ride and birdwatching along the way.
Once you arrive on the island, the naturalist guide will take you on a hike to spot wildlife up close. On arrival we immediately saw many frigate birds flying around, and at the time it was mating season (June) so the male frigate birds had their red necks fully inflated in an attempt to court a mate.
We kept walking and shortly came across the famous blue-footed Boobies. We saw these birds doing courtship dances, nesting their eggs, and a mother with her new young.
As we continued walking towards the ocean we saw many marine iguanas basking in the sun from their swim.
After the guided hike, we returned to the boat for a quick ride to a nearby snorkeling site. The water was clear, and we could see sea lions before we entered.
Our guide led us on a snorkeling trip where we were able to swim with the playful sea lion cubs and explore some beautiful coral reefs filled with large schools of colorful fish. After the snorkel, we returned to the boat where they fed us a nice warm lunch.
The last part of the tour was a quick boat ride over to a scenic beach where there was almost no one else (except of course the resident sea lions).
Here we were able to sunbathe and swim while observing the resident sea lions. This was one of my favorite Galápagos day tours for its variety of wildlife. Keep the required distance from animals even when they approach.
Practical information
- Location: Isla Lobos, offshore from San Cristóbal.
- Costs and inclusions: Confirm boat, guide, snorkeling gear, food and any beach stop in your package.
- Access: Authorized guided outing; wildlife behavior and landings vary.
- Allow: A local operator advertises four to five hours; confirm your chosen tour.
- Planning tip: Choose for a mixed walk-and-water outing. Lora’s June courtship sightings describe her visit, not a calendar guarantee.
3. Cycle Through the Highlands to Puerto Chino
If you would rather cycle than take a highlands tour or taxi to Puerto Chino, you can ride through San Cristóbal’s highlands on your way to the beach.
You can rent a bike from a shop in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Ask for the current daily price, helmet, lock, repair equipment and return conditions; the old USD 20 quote is not a verified current rate.
This is a demanding road ride with sustained climbing, descents and traffic, not a casual beach cycle.
The climb from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno into the highlands was substantial, and the descent toward Puerto Chino was also exhilarating. Plan the return climb or arrange a pickup before you leave.
My advice is to take both parts slow and bring more water than you think you’ll need. Also, depending on the season, you may want a raincoat.
There are places along the way where you can stop and spend time off the bike, including El Junco and the Cerro Colorado tortoise center. Allow enough time for each detour.
You cannot ride all the way onto Puerto Chino beach. Leave the bike securely at the parking area and follow the final walking path.
Practical information
- Location: Road from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno through the highlands toward Puerto Chino.
- Costs and inclusions: Current rental, helmet and pickup quote required.
- Access: Ride in daylight with suitable equipment; assess weather, traffic and your experience.
- Allow: Allow a full day with stops if riding the route; agree a turnaround time.
- Planning tip: The return involves climbing too. A prearranged vehicle pickup can change the difficulty, but must be confirmed before leaving.
4. El Junco Lagoon
If you do spend some time exploring San Cristobal’s highlands, I recommend you check out Lagoon El Junco.
Though it’s called a lagoon, El Junco doesn’t have much in common with many of the other lagoons in the Galapagos. It’s actually a lake made from an ancient caldera that’s since flooded.
The lake is a place to look for frigatebirds bathing and preening in the fresh water.
I recommend visiting when visibility is good, as cloud and rain can obscure the view. Allow around 20 minutes uphill from the parking area, with more time for the return and looking around.
Practical information
- Location: El Junco in San Cristóbal’s highlands.
- Costs and inclusions: Transport and guiding depend on your arrangements; confirm site access conditions.
- Access: Cloud, rain and slippery paths can affect the visit; use open marked routes.
- Allow: Allow 45–60 minutes at the site, excluding transport, as a planning estimate.
- Planning tip: Combine with Cerro Colorado and Puerto Chino rather than paying for three separate drives.
5. Take a Highlands Tour
If you prefer not to cycle across the highlands to Puerto Chino, arrange a dedicated road trip or guided tour.
The landscape changes as you climb, from drier lowlands to greener highlands and rolling volcanic hills.
While you can explore on your own by hiring a taxi, I chose to go with a nature tour. My guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the island’s ecology. I learned and observed much more with him than I would have on my own.
Practical information
- Location: Highland road trip from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
- Costs and inclusions: Ask for the full vehicle/guide price, waiting time and any entry charges.
- Access: Confirm the stops and park access for your date.
- Allow: A local operator advertises about five hours for El Junco, the tortoise center and Puerto Chino.
- Planning tip: This is the easier alternative to the cycling route. A taxi driver is not automatically a licensed naturalist guide.
6. Join a 360-Degree Boat Tour
A 360-degree boat tour combines coastal scenery and snorkeling around San Cristóbal in one long day.
Departure and return times depend on the operator and conditions. Keep the whole day free and confirm the authorized route for your departure.
Typical advertised stops include Bahía Rosa Blanca, Punta Pitt waters, Bahía Sardina, Cerro Brujo and Kicker Rock. A boat observation stop at Punta Pitt is not the same as landing for its birdwatching hike. Compare the exact stops and snorkeling time before booking.
Practical information
- Location: Boat circuit departing Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
- Costs and inclusions: Compare boat, guide, wetsuit, snorkel equipment, food and pickup for the selected departure.
- Access: Weather and park permissions can change stops. Confirm whether any Punta Pitt stop is from the boat only.
- Allow: Full day; avoid a fixed flight or onward ferry afterward.
- Planning tip: Often overlaps with Kicker Rock. Choose both only if you deliberately want another snorkeling visit.
7. Hike to Cerro Tijeretas
Next to San Cristóbal’s Interpretation Center, a trail leads toward Cerro Tijeretas and viewpoints over the coast. Allow roughly 45–60 minutes for the climb and stops as a planning estimate, plus your return.
The route also gives access to the Tijeretas snorkeling area. Bring equipment only if you intend to enter the water and conditions permit; check current access and swell before doing so.
If you’d rather get a birds eye view, you can follow the trail up to several lookout spots along the ridge overlooking the ocean and Kicker Rock.
From there, you can either turn back or, if you’re feeling ambitious, continue on to Baquerizo Beach.
Practical information
- Location: Trails near the Interpretation Center, outside Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
- Costs and inclusions: Independent walking option; equipment and any hired guiding cost separately.
- Access: Check trail and snorkeling access locally. Conditions at the water entry can change.
- Allow: Allow one to two hours for viewpoints and return; swimming adds time.
- Planning tip: Steps and rocky access are not universally suitable. Turn back before you lose time needed for the return.
8. Explore Puerto Baquerizo Moreno
If you want a more laid-back afternoon between beaches and excursions, spend a few hours wandering around Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
The town is actually the province capital of the Galapagos Islands and was founded way back in the mid 1800s.
The island port makes a practical base for restaurants, tour departures and waterfront walks.
If you walk closer to the sea, you may even find sea lions, completely comfortable with the locals, lounging about on park benches or boat decks.
Practical information
- Location: Waterfront and central streets of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
- Costs and inclusions: No tour needed for a town walk; food and purchases extra.
- Access: Flexible daylight or early-evening outing; businesses set their own hours.
- Allow: Allow one to two hours or use it between other plans.
- Planning tip: Keep at least two meters from wildlife and wait if sea lions block your path.
9. Walk to Playa Baquerizo

Beyond the route to Cerro Tijeretas, a longer trail continues to Playa Baquerizo. Allow roughly two hours each way from the Interpretation Center area as a conservative planning estimate, depending on pace and conditions.
You may see wildlife along the way and at the beach, but do not choose the walk expecting guaranteed turtles, sea lions or rays.
Bring hiking shoes and plenty of drinking water; carry snorkeling equipment only if you plan to use it in suitable conditions. Even without the beach, I found the hike engaging and fun.
Practical information
- Location: Longer trail beyond Cerro Tijeretas toward Playa Baquerizo.
- Costs and inclusions: No paid tour assumed; consider a guide if unsure of navigation or suitability.
- Access: Check current trail opening and weather; keep to marked paths.
- Allow: Allow a substantial half-day, including roughly two hours each way and beach time.
- Planning tip: Longer and rougher than the viewpoint walk. Choose Tijeretas alone if time, heat or energy are limiting.
10. Visit the Interpretation Center
An afternoon at the San Cristobal Interpretation Center may be worth your time if you’re interested in learning more about the history of the Galapagos Islands (or if you’re looking for an activity to fill a rainy day).
The center doesn’t just focus on the islands’ natural history, but also their human history and current efforts at conservation.
The exhibits on my visit used pictures, stories and English and Spanish text. Once you have finished learning, you can explore the adjacent trail system if it is open.
Practical information
- Location: Interpretation Center near the Tijeretas trail area.
- Costs and inclusions: Check current admission and any guided-visit charges with the park.
- Access: Confirm opening hours and which exhibit rooms are available; older schedules differ.
- Allow: Allow 45–90 minutes, plus any trails.
- Planning tip: Useful context before wildlife tours. A rainy-day museum visit does not make adjacent wet trails equally suitable.
11. Visit La Lobería
La Lobería is a curved sandy beach near Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, with sea lions resting along the shore. They are wild animals, not tame companions.
I enjoyed sharing the waves with these creatures, but keep at least two meters away, do not touch or feed them, and leave their route to the water clear.
They are surprisingly graceful in the water. Arrange a taxi or plan a walk based on your hotel’s location, with time for the final path; the old USD 3 fare is not a verified current quote.
Practical information
- Location: La Lobería, outside Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
- Costs and inclusions: Confirm taxi fare and return pickup; equipment rental extra.
- Access: Assess surf and entry conditions on the day; wildlife presence does not imply safe swimming.
- Allow: Allow two to three hours including transport or walking.
- Planning tip: Beach observation is worthwhile without swimming. Do not approach resting animals or enter rough water to follow them.
12. Take a Punta Pitt Landing and Hiking Tour
Punta Pitt is on the northeastern end of San Cristóbal. Visit with an authorized boat excursion that explicitly includes the landing and guided hike.
There’s a small beach flanked by rising volcanic cliff faces, and the water there is a great place for snorkeling. But the hike is what makes the journey worth a day.
The trail climbs inland from the landing beach to birdwatching areas. Expect uneven volcanic ground and confirm the current route, duration and wet-landing arrangements.
Punta Pitt is known for red-footed, blue-footed and Nazca boobies. These are possibilities, not a promise that every outing will see all three.
Practical information
- Location: Punta Pitt at San Cristóbal’s northeastern end.
- Costs and inclusions: Quote must specify boat, permitted landing, guide, hiking and water activity.
- Access: Authorized tour required; landing and route depend on conditions.
- Allow: A dedicated outing takes a full day; one local operator lists a roughly two-hour hike.
- Planning tip: Book the landing-and-hike product for birdwatching. A 360 boat pass is not a substitute.
13. Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado
At the Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado, the national park raises and protects San Cristóbal giant tortoises. This road-accessible breeding center is distinct from the remote natural Galapaguera visitor site.
If you haven’t yet had the chance to see these creatures for yourself (or if you want to see a few more before departing), La Galapaguera is a great place to do so.
Confirm current opening, guiding and any fees before your visit. The original blanket claim of free guided tours is not a verified current offer.
Practical information
- Location: Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado on the highlands/Puerto Chino road route.
- Costs and inclusions: Current admission and guiding arrangements need park confirmation.
- Access: Check opening before departure; stay on designated visitor paths.
- Allow: Allow about one hour plus road travel.
- Planning tip: Combine with El Junco and Puerto Chino. Do not confuse this center with Galapaguera Natural.
14. Make a Day Trip to Española
Española Island is the furthest south of all the Islas in the Galapagos. Though it’s a bit of a trip, it is possible to visit the island in a day.
Day-trip itineraries vary. Distinguish a Punta Suárez landing and walk from a Gardner-area snorkeling stop or an actual Gardner Bay beach landing; they are not interchangeable.
If you enjoy birdwatching, ask specifically for an itinerary that includes Punta Suárez.
Española is the principal breeding island for waved albatrosses. Galápagos Conservancy describes the nesting season as April to December; arrival and departure vary, and sightings are not guaranteed.
The crossing from San Cristóbal is long and can be rough. Allow a full day and ask the operator for the expected crossing time and cancellation arrangements for your date.
Practical information
- Location: Española, a separate island reached by an authorized boat excursion.
- Costs and inclusions: Request a written itinerary and total including guiding, gear, meals and any extras.
- Access: Confirm a permitted departure and actual landing sites before arranging your hotel nights.
- Allow: Full day with a long sea crossing; not a departure-day activity.
- Planning tip: Best chosen for the specific wildlife/landing you want. Gardner snorkeling does not guarantee a Gardner Bay beach landing.
Where to Eat in San Cristóbal
Grilled fish from my original trip
On my earlier trip, a small family-owned restaurant opposite the church in the town center served grilled fish that I enjoyed. I recommend trying local brujo fish when available. The restaurant was not named in my notes, so these directions are not a verified current listing.
Food-stop planning
This is a historical food note. The current business details, menu, prices and hours are unverified. Ask locally and compare the menu before ordering; do not rely on the old landmark directions alone. Allow roughly an hour for a meal.
Seafood empanadas
Near the park and table tennis hall, I found a small local restaurant with seafood empanadas that I particularly liked. Its name and current operation are unconfirmed; treat this as a food suggestion from the original trip, not current directions to a verified business.

Cri’s Burgers
Cri’s Burgers was another option in my original guide, with generous burgers, fries and a broad menu. Check its current operation, menu and opening hours locally before making a special trip.

Where to Stay
Choose a convenient town base
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the practical base for these outings. Casa Playa Mann offers room categories to compare; check location, access, breakfast and cancellation for your dates rather than assuming all rooms have the same view. Our Galápagos hotel guide covers more accommodation options.
Arrival, Budget and a Three-Night Plan
Confirm transfers before excursions
Arrive at San Cristóbal Airport (SCY) or on a confirmed passenger boat connection. Check hotel transfers and current fares. From Isabela, do not assume a direct passenger boat: verify an available inter-island flight or the separate connections via Santa Cruz. Keep arrival and departure days flexible.
For the standard foreign-adult category, Galápagos park entry is US$200, plus the separate US$20 TCT. Other categories differ. Add flights, hotel, meals, local transport, selected tours and equipment extras. These arrival fees are not charged anew for every excursion.
Full entry and island-connection planning is in our land-based Galápagos itinerary.
Three nights, two full activity days
- Arrival: Settle in and explore the waterfront.
- Full day 1: Highlands by road, combining El Junco, Cerro Colorado and Puerto Chino.
- Full day 2: One snorkeling boat tour, choosing Kicker Rock or 360.
- Departure: Keep your transfer clear of excursions. Add nights for Tijeretas, La Lobería, Isla Lobos, Punta Pitt or Española.
- Scuba variant: This short plan assumes snorkeling. Adapt the order and add a no-dive buffer with your operator if scuba diving.
Season and choosing your activities
December to May is generally warmer and often calmer at sea; June to November is generally cooler with garúa mist and potentially rougher crossings. These are broad patterns, not forecasts. Check Galápagos Conservancy’s planning guidance. Bring water, sun protection, walking shoes and a rain layer.
Ask about each boat boarding, wet landing, walking route and water entry if you have mobility needs. A comfortable hotel does not make the excursions step-free. Wildlife is never guaranteed; keep the required distance and follow park instructions.

San Cristóbal FAQs
How many days should you spend on San Cristóbal?
Three nights give two full activity days, enough for one main boat excursion and a highlands or coastal day. Add nights for Española, Punta Pitt or a second water outing. Avoid prepaid excursions on arrival or departure day, and give scuba divers additional flexibility for flight and altitude intervals.
Should you book Kicker Rock or the 360-degree tour?
Choose a dedicated Kicker Rock trip if that site is your main priority. Choose a 360-degree tour for a wider coastal circuit with several stops. Many 360 itineraries include Kicker Rock, so compare actual snorkeling time and stops before buying both. Scuba requires a separate, appropriate diving product.
Is the Kicker Rock booking here a scuba dive?
No. The GetYourGuide booking linked here is a snorkeling tour. The author’s original account describes a scuba dive arranged in partnership with Planet Ocean. Certified divers should confirm experience requirements, equipment and the correct diving itinerary directly with a dive operator before reserving.
Does a 360 tour include the Punta Pitt hike?
Do not assume so. A Punta Pitt mention may mean a boat-based observation or fishing stop rather than a landing and guided birdwatching walk. If the hike matters to you, ask for written confirmation of the landing and trail or choose a dedicated Punta Pitt excursion.
Can you see sea lions without booking a tour?
Sea lions can be observed along the town waterfront and at accessible coastal sites, subject to local access rules. You do not need to enter the water for a worthwhile observation. Keep at least two meters away, never feed or touch them, and wait if they block a path.
Can you visit Española on a day trip from San Cristóbal?
Yes, with an authorized excursion and a confirmed departure. It is a long boat day. Check whether the itinerary includes Punta Suárez, Gardner-area snorkeling or a Gardner Bay beach landing, as these are different stops. Waved albatross sightings depend on season and conditions, not just the island name.
Is cycling to Puerto Chino suitable for everyone?
No. The road route includes substantial climbing, descents and traffic, with another climb on the return. Choose it only if the distance, conditions and bike setup match your ability. A taxi or guided highlands outing is the simpler way to combine El Junco, Cerro Colorado and Puerto Chino.
Which airport serves San Cristóbal?
San Cristóbal Airport uses the code SCY and is on the same island as Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. It is different from Baltra Airport, code GPS, used for Santa Cruz. Check the island and airport on every flight and allow a buffer rather than relying on a same-day boat connection before flying.
Practical information reviewed October 4, 2026. Personal accounts and photos describe earlier visits. Confirm current access, fees and departure details before travel.
